Dome Crater Pan

The dome pan from the broken ceiling to the crater below was a tricky thing. Originally, we thought about mounting the camera to a tripod and panning from the ceiling down, but that would have been a pain to motion track. So I went over there and took a few pictures with a high resolution digital SLR, and then stitched them together in photoshop. The original pictures were very, very bright, so I did a lot of exposure/brightness contrast/burn tool to make it all dim down. Then, I placed the large layer in After Effects, and added all the VFX elements like the smoke, sparks, and such (using Video Copilot’s Action Essentials II) and then the crater itself created in Blender. Then, it was just simply a matter of panning downward in After Effects and adding a little camera movement to make it seem handheld.
